How Youth in Motion’s Top 20 Under 20 Program will benefit from Equity Through Education The proceeds from Equity Through Education are allocated to the Top 20 Under 20 bursary fund. Securing a position as a Top 20 Under 20 means receiving a financial award that can be used towards furthering one’s education or field of study. About Youth in Motion’s Top 20 Under 20 Program As a leader and advocate, Youth in Motion delivers highly effective and efficient programs to and for all youth. Youth in Motion is a results-oriented, experienced, leading edge team and through the delivery of our signature programs like the Top 20 Under 20 Program, we give youth the tools, skills, confidence and life maps they need to realize their full potential. The Top 20 Under 20 Program is more than just an award. It is a year-long leadership and development training program designed to identify outstanding young leaders, further develop their skills and aptitudes, focus and fuel their passions. Components of the Top 20 Under 20 Program include:
Who does the Top 20 Under 20 Program support? A diverse range of young leaders who have demonstrated innovation, leadership and achievement in a variety of fields and aspects of life – the arts, medical research, community service, social organizing for change, business and entrepreneurship, the environment. A call for applications is posted and advertised beginning in October with the application deadline in January. All youth under 20 years old are welcomed and encouraged to apply. Top 20 Under 20 Results The return on an investment in Top 20 Under 20 youth is felt at the local level, provincially, nationally and internationally. These young leaders utilize the training, leadership development, bursary support and mentor relationships of the Top 20 Under 20 program to make a positive difference in their own communities and for others. Participating in the Top 20 Under 20 Program results in a number of things none the least of which is increased profile, often international attention for our Award Recipients. Kayla Cornale, Top 20 Under 20 Award Recipient from Burlington, Ontario, came to the attention of Stanford University and subsequently CNN. This past winter, Kayla won CNN’s Young Heroes Award, beating out youth from 93 other countries. Kayla is the inventor of “Sounds Into Syllables”, a groundbreaking teaching program for autistic children using the keys of a piano keyboard. Ben Gulak, a current 2008 Top 20 Under 20 Award Recipient and inventor of the UNO, has caught the attention of Popular Science Magazine and and can’t keep up with the media interviews and investor interest. The UNO is the world’s first environmentally responsible motorcycle. Yvonne Su (Top 20 alumnus from 2007 and Shamin Mohammed (alumnus from 2005) have dovetailed their passions and commitments to the environment and HIV/AIDS prevention respectively and have created “Spread Trees Not Aids” – a program of LetsStopAids.org that educates youth from Africa about the environment and Aids prevention.
