Healthcare Biographies


James Love

Jim is Managing Director and Head of the BMO Capital Markets Healthcare Group, where he focuses on the firm’s advisory practice. Prior to joining BMO Capital Markets, Jim was a Partner at MTS Health Partners in New York, where he was responsible for developing new investment banking relationships and assisted in the management of the firm’s private equity fund. Previously, he served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Medical Manager Corp. (now WebMD Corp.) where he was responsible for the company’s finance, treasury, tax and corporate development functions. Prior to that, Jim spent 15 years with Merrill Lynch & Co. where he was a Managing Director responsible for developing investment banking relationships with numerous Fortune 500 companies. While at Merrill, Jim also assisted in the management of the investment banking division and headed its Healthcare Products Group. Jim joined BMO Capital Markets in December 2004.

Jim has an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business and an AB from Brown University.

Christine Gallagher

Christine is a Managing Director in the BMO Capital Markets Healthcare Group. She is responsible for developing and executing the firm’s investment banking business with life sciences companies. With 20 years of healthcare investment banking experience, Christine was most recently a Partner at C.E. Unterberg, Towbin, where she headed the Healthcare investment banking practice. Prior to that, Christine spent 15 years at JP Morgan Chase where she was a Managing Director in the Healthcare Group. Christine has advised on over USD 20 billion of merger, acquisition and divestiture transactions and raised over USD 16 billion of capital for clients, primarily in the life sciences and medical device sectors. Previously, Christine did medical research at Sloan-Kettering Cancer Research Institute and NYU Medical Center. Christine joined BMO Capital Markets in 2005.

Christine has an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business and a Bachelor of Arts in Biology (magna cum laude) from Colgate University. She is a member of the Colgate University Alumni Corporation Board of Directors.

Susan Bratton

Susan is a Director in the BMO Capital Markets Healthcare Group, providing strategic advice and financing solutions to healthcare services companies. With 15 years of prior investment banking experience and five years of insurance industry experience, Susan has worked at CIBC World Markets, Wasserstein Perella, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette and Marsh & McLennan. Susan is also President and CEO of Katabiann Advisors Corporation, a healthcare advisory firm that she founded in 2003.

Susan holds an MBA from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business and a Bachelor of Arts from Duke University.

Jerome (J.J.) Brown

J.J. is a Director in the BMO Capital Markets Healthcare Group. Prior to joining the firm, J.J. was a Vice President in the Mergers & Acquisitions Advisory Group at Brown Brothers Harriman. Previously, he was an Associate in the Corporate Finance Group of the law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom. J.J. joined BMO Capital Markets in 2005.

J.J. has a JD from NYU School of Law and graduated with honors from Georgetown University. He is also a CFA Charterholder.

Eric Cheng

Eric is a Director in the BMO Capital Markets Healthcare Group. Prior to joining BMO Capital Markets, Eric was a Senior Vice President at WR Hambrecht & Co., where he was a founding member of its healthcare investment banking group. Previously, Eric was an investment banker with Deutsche Bank Securities and Lehman Brothers. Eric has completed over USD 5 billion in equity and debt financings and M&A transactions. Eric also has significant financial accounting experience, having begun his career in public accounting at Deloitte & Touche. Eric joined BMO Capital Markets in 2005.

Eric has an MBA from Columbia University's Graduate School of Business and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Michael Mandel

Michael is a Director in the BMO Capital Markets Healthcare Group. With nearly 10 years of investment banking experience, he focuses on providing strategic advice and financing solutions to medical technology and device companies. Prior to joining BMO Capital Markets, Michael was a Vice President at Banc of America Securities, where he served in its Healthcare Investment Banking Group. Previous to working at Banc of America Securities, Michael worked in the Healthcare Investment Banking Group at PaineWebber Incorporated. Michael joined BMO Capital Markets in 2005.

Michael earned his MBA from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business and received a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) from the University of Manitoba.

Geraldine Rudig

Gerri is a Director in the BMO Capital Markets Healthcare Group providing solutions to not-for-profit healthcare companies. Prior to joining BMO Capital Markets, she was Senior Vice President at LaSalle Bank (ABNAMRO) focusing on both the for-profit and not-for-profit acute care sector as well as large cap pharmaceutical companies. In previous assignments, Gerri was also responsible for underwriting credit policy, healthcare strategy initiatives and developing new healthcare portfolios. With over 25 years as a relationship banker, she has delivered to her clients complex credit solutions as well as Treasury Management, interest rate products and investment alternatives. Gerri joined BMO Capital Markets in April 2008.

Gerri earned her MBA from University of Colorado and has a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry from University of Illinois, Chicago.

Andrew Pluta

Andy is a Vice President in the BMO Capital Markets Healthcare Group. He has been in the banking and financial services industry for over 18 years. Prior to joining BMO Capital Markets in 2008, Andy was a Vice President at Merrill Lynch Capital in the Healthcare Finance Group, managing a portfolio of equity sponsored, leveraged transactions in various healthcare sectors. Prior to Merrill Lynch Capital, Andy held positions at GE Commercial Finance and its predecessor company Heller Financial, Inc. in both the generalist corporate finance sector and the Energy sector. Before joining Heller, Andy spent five years in the Media and Communications Finance Group at FINOVA Capital Group and six years at BankAmerica in an asset based lending unit.

Andy earned an MBA from DePaul University and a BS in Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Martin Smithmyer

Martin is a Vice President in the BMO Capital Markets’ Healthcare Group. Over the past nine years, Martin held similar positions within the healthcare investment banking group at Wells Fargo Securities, the portfolio group at American Capital Strategies and the venture capital financing business at NewMarket Global Consulting Group. Formerly, Martin held positions in sales and business development at Biomet and Cole Medical Inc.

Martin received an MBA from American University and graduated from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County with a degree in Biology in 1996.
